The Notorious IBE is back for it's 10th edition since 1998.
On september 24, 25 and 26, the International Breakdance Event (IBE) will take place in Heerlen, down in the south of Holland.

After two successful first editions in Heerlen in the past two years , the IBE organisation and the city of Heerlen are now ready for the special 10th edition! The Notorious IBE realizes unique meetings among general public, both amateur and professional dancers as well as other aspects of the Hip Hop dance culture.

BBoying is the main thing during the festival, but also other related dance styles such as Popping, Locking, New Style & Hip Hop are brought to the attention.

This year the festival presents about a total of 30 different dance programs. Expected highlights in the program include the European qualification for the UK BBoy Championships World Finals, Seven2Smoke, The BGirl Crew Battle and the highly anticipated All Battles All. This year the All Battles All will feature some of the best dancers of the past IBE years.

All The Ladies Say is a film that highlights the lives of six iconic female street dancers from San Jose, Atlanta, Miami and Chicago, who have carved a niche in the physically challenging, male dominated breakdance world. Discussions about motherhood, sexual tension, femininity versus masculinity and the rap industry/mainstream images are a few of the themes explored by the documentarys main characters. International dancers not only make appearances but also add their two cents about life as a B Girl in the Hip-hop world. The director is a veteran female breakdancer, (B Girl Rokafella), who co-founded Full Circle Producutions, Inc. in 1996 with her husband Kwikstep. For over a decade, their mission has been to present uplifting Hip Hop dance performances and provide educational Hip Hop dance programming through out NYC. In 2005, Rokafella felt the timing was perfect to introduce a national introspective discussion series, bringing the community together to address issues on personal and professional levels that can be resolved with sensitive and open dialogue. She wrote a grant proposal to the Ford Foundation to fund this series of discussions called The B Girl Sitdowns. In 2006 she curated a six city series of discussions and activities that would be organized and hosted by female street dancers in their respective cities, extending an invitation to all Hip Hop artists, male and female alike. The archival footage began to develop a story of its own and so began the quest to produce a documentary about the journey of B Girls. Full Circle has recently received a film production grant from Bronx Council on the Arts, which adds to Rokafellas continuous fund raising efforts. On June 3, 2009, Full Circle will bring the main characters of All The Ladies Say to the Bronx Museum to partake in a film screening, Q & A, dance classes and dance demonstration, as part of local teen council party and film fund raising activity. She was trained in ballet for 10 years but eventually stopped and came to the U.S. to study physical therapy at UC Davis in 1999. At this time she met Michael Cagly a hip hop teacher who introduced her into breaking. Emiko Soon became a member of “Flexible Flave” crew and traveled to battle other crews in NY, AZ, and TX. In 2001 Emiko moved to LA to be a professional dancer. She trained ballet, jazz, hip hop, and modern at the Edge, Millennium dance complex, and Zeal studios at the time. Also, She joined the hip hop dance company called “One Step Ahead”. After Emiko performed with the company and several artists in LA, she moved to NY to learn more about hip hop culture and joined Illstyle and Peace Production. While she lived in NY, she taught at Broadway Dance Center, Peridance, and other dance studios. Currently, she lives in Philadelphia working with Illstyle and Peace Production, Rennie Harrise Puremovement, Montazh Performing Arts Company. Everybody's got a story, here's mine,

I first discovered popular music as a young kid in the mid 1970's. The first song I remember making an impact on me (besides Schoolhouse Rock) was "What's Goin On" by Marvin Gaye. The TV station I used to watch would play it saturday morning right before cartoons started at 6AM. I remember liking the music, the vocals, and even the message it brought. (Kids understand more than we give them credit for). In the late 1970's I started buying records. My second grade teacher would play us disco songs on Fridays. I was maybe 6 years old and would get a record for my birthday or Christmas. Some favorites were "Saturday Night Fever," "Boogie Nights," and "YMCA."

1979 was my "coming of age" year. I was nine years old and started getting allowance. What that translates to is: I started buying records weekly. I could only afford the 45 singles, but that was enough for me. Holidays would get me a 12" (Double Dutch Bus) or an album (Cameo). I would also save my lunch money and eat when I came home so I could buy more records.

Coincidentally, 1979 was also the year that hip hop records started to spring up at the neighborhood record store. It was mostly songs on an independent label called Sugarhill Records that made it to the West Coast (They had their promotion, as well as their distribution together.) I soon noticed that whatever I bought from that label would be consistant to the other songs from the label.

In 1982, I bought "Planet Rock" on Tommy Boy Records. I started to realise that they always had it together. With songs like "Pack Jam", "Play That Beat," "Space Is the Place," and "Play At Your Own Risk," you always got your five dollar's worth.

Then I noticed a pattern. Sunnyview Records was cool because of "Jam On Revenge" and "ET Boogie". Beauty & the Beat Records had "Triple Threat," "King Kut," and "What the Party Needs." Vintertainment had "2,3 Break," "Hip Hop On Wax," "Girls," and "Pee Wee's Dance." Def Jam had "It's Yours," "I Need A Beat," "Drum Machine," "Beat The Clock," and "Party's Gettin Rough" (They couldn't go wrong.) At this time, I was a bedroom DJ, making mixtapes for my friends at school. I also borrowed a drum machine and started recording demos with a group called The Slobs.

Dreams of being the next Cold Chillin

For me, 1986 was the year that I first considered starting a label when I grew up. I wrote a high school essay about it that year (Just recently found it). I even went so far as to decide against college, since I figured it wouldn't help my music career anyway. (I later changed my mind and got my degree in Business Marketing).

Four years later while still in college, I put out my first record ("You Can't Swing This" by Lyrical Prophecy) with a label called PMR Records. It was run by Kim Collett, who DJed with me at the local radio station (KSJS). I got my dad to pitch in $500 to get the thing released, making me a part owner in the label. We only pressed 500 copies, never mastered it, cut and pasted the artwork, and didn't even know you could sell them to a distributor. We gave some copies away to our friends and family and local radio stations and sold some to the local stores. After all that, we still had about half of the records leftover. But our goal was to make a record and we had reached it! We were local heros. Who would ever think a group from San Jose, California could put out their own hip hop record?

Later, that year I met Charles Hicks AKA Charizma. We hit it off right away and before you knew it, we were a group. Charizma was a lot like myself in that he was weird, liked to take chances musically, and had a good knowledge and appreciation of hip hop (even though he was only 16 when we met.) After a while, Charizma and I decided that we wanted to sign with a label that had already proven themselves. Wild Pitch and Tuff City came to mind, since we liked their artist rosters, but we were thinking bigger like an Elektra (Leaders, KMD, Del, Brand Nubians) or Jive (Tribe, BDP, Too Short). The Source had just come out as did Yo MTV Raps and hip hop promotion was becoming the fifth element of hip hop.

After shopping our tape to a few labels, we decided to "settle" for Hollywood Basics (Walt Disney). We were never too excited about the deal (we were cocky back then), although we were fans of Organized Konfusion. We figured that at least we would have artistic freedom with them, since they were the most interested in us. Besides, they were promising us soundtracks, a movie role in "Sister Act 2" alongside a then unknown Lauryn Hill, and a big wad of cash.

As far as the artistic freedom, the exact opposite was the case. Since they hadn't proven themselves as a hip hop label, they wouldn't give any of the groups freedom. Being owned by Walt Disney made it even a harder situation, because the people in charge had no experience with hip hop. Charizma and I eventually got out of the deal right before they ended their hip hop division. Two months later, in December 1993, Charizma passed away.

Of course, this put my life into perspective. At first I quit music completely. Eventually, making beats and DJing was a way for me to deal with the pain of losing both my music partner and my best friend. I also decided that our music had to be heard. I made some demos and gave them out to a few industry people I knew, but nobody was serious about the project.

While I was giving out tapes, Dave Paul from the Bomb Hip Hop Magazine put out an album featuring the best hip hop artists of the Bay Area. It featured (among others) Blackalicious, Mystic Journeymen, Qbert, and of course Charizma.

The next two years brought several compilations (Return of the DJ), instrumental beats (Peanut Butter Breaks), and production work (Kool Keith) for me. I even released an EP called "Step On Our Egos" for Southpaw Records. Still in the back of my mind, I wanted to release the Charizma songs. Making the dream a reality

After recording for these other labels, I realised that I was having as much fun promoting the records as recording the songs. I also became confident that I could do a good job running a label, and more importantly convinced a distibutor (Nu Gruv Alliance) that I could do it. 1996 saw the release of "My World Premier" by Charizma and Peanut Butter Wolf on Stones Throw Records. The name "Stones Throw" came from a saying my mom used that Charizma and I teased her about (We were big on mom jokes). It had been three years since he died, but people still thought it was a new song. A year later, I was at KRS One's "Step Into A World" video shoot when Kenny Parker played it. KRS was nodding his head and asked Kenny who it was and how he could get a copy. At that point, I realised another goal had been met - approval from someone who influenced us.

So, why am I telling you this personal story? Because Stones Throw Records is a very personal label for me. I put out what I personally like and save the rest for the other labels out there. As executive producer, I don't put out what I think the people will like, I put out what I like. This has worked for me so far, and if it stops working for me, it will be the end of Stones Throw as a label. I've passed on some artists that I knew would sell a lot of units because I didn't like the songs. That sounds like a bad business move and from a purely financial standpoint it is one, but profit isn't the only thing that drives my label. If money were my sole motivation, I'd be rich by now because so far I've attained everything I've put my mind to. I may be wealthy someday, but only as an indirect consequence of putting out what I believe to be good music.

As an artist myself, I have the artists help decide how much money to spend on promoting their records. We all split the profits after expenses, so it makes sense that we collectively decide how much to spend on promotion. This includes video budget, advertising, radio promotion, video promotion, street teams, snippet tapes, stickers, flats, posters, 8x10 glossies, etc.

As a DJ myself, I have always been commited to releasing vinyl LPs as well as breakbeat records. I put out instrumental versions of the albums because (1) the artists should be able to rock a show from vinyl, and (2) the DJs ask for it.

Since my record buying "career" started as a kid buying 45's, I'm now releasing 45's and have found several artists commited to joining the cause of preserving this endangered species, even if it means selling only 1,000 units per title. Does the reality live up to the dream?

So is it stressful running a record label? Of course.

First of all, there are never enough hours in the day to answer every letter, phone call, and email. People get straight up offended when you don't respond. In the morning you brainstorm about work while taking a shower and at night your dreams revolve around deadlines that you missed. Collecting money from people and for people also takes a toll after a while. Monthly phone bills the size of a house payment can bring on an ulcer. Also, you want to help people starting out because you were there once, but when people get aggresive and demanding, you have to draw the line. Others are upset with you perceived success and want to keep you down so they talk about you and of course it gets back to you.

Is it challenging? Of course.

Maintaining relationships is the biggest challenge because it is so time intensive. You have relationships with your artists, distributors, radio stations, video stations, stores, writers, promoters, publicists, designers, pressing plants, and of course the people buying your records. Sometimes you piss people off by giving your opinion and at other times people piss you off by giving you theirs. The challenge is to move ahead with that person, because the industry is small and incestual and you'll probably have to work together in the future.

Is it fulfilling? Of course.

AUSTRALIA'S FIRST INTERNATIONAL B-GIRL COMPETITION

SATURDAY MAY 5TH 2007 - MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - BELIEVE IT!

In 2007, Freestyle4 Entertainment and Melbourne Music Academy presented Australia's First International B-Girl Competition, 'She Got Game'. Female breakdancers (B-Girls) from around the world congregated at RMIT University's Storey Hall Auditorium in Melbourne's CBD, on Saturday 5th May 2007, and battled it out for the $5000 prize money and the bragging rights of taking out 'She Got Game'. This all ages event ran from 11:00am – 6pm. The day included 2 on 2 B-Girl battles, DJs, MC & Dance Performances, Fashion Show, Graf Displays, Giveaways, Merchandise Stalls, Youth Hip Hop Forum & more.

Breakdancing is the original Hip Hop dance style and for the first time in Australia it was brought to centre stage in all its glory by some of world's best B-Girls. Breakdancing is a highly skilled and energy-fuelled dance in which breakers 'battle' to win, judged on their ability to hit the beat of the music, their skills, and perhaps most importantly, their flava and style. This event brought the International standard of this dance to Australia, with competitors who came from countries including the U.S.A., Germany, New Zealand and of course Australia.

The competition featured guests B-Girl Asia One, who was one of the competition's judges, and DJ Bles One, who dropped beats for the battles, both flew direct from the U.S.A.. Asia One is one of the most recognised and respected B-Girls in the world and member of crews No Easy Props, Zulu Kweenz and Essential Rockers. DJ Bles One is DJ and member of world renowned breakdancing crew Massive Monkees. The day also featured a free one hour Youth Hip Hop Forum from 11am including Asia One.

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - BELIEVE IT!

Hey B-Girls and B-Boys,

In 2008 NutrientWater presented SHE GOT GAME, the World’s Largest International B-Girl Competition! Once again the world came to Australia to watch the world’s best female breakdancers, also referred to as B-Girls, battle it out for the 'She Got Game' title and AUD $7500 in cash prizes.

In this highly skilled and energy-fuelled dance, the B-Girls ‘battled’ to win, judged on their ability to hit the beat of the music, their skills, and perhaps most importantly, their flavour and style.

The 2008 event had world class competitors Peppa and Wenrock (U.S.A.), Taya and A.T. (Finland), Narumi and Shie-Chan (Japan), Bean and Naj (U.S.A) as well as New Zealand and Australia’s best! Plus special guest B-Girl Beta (Street Masters Crew, U.S.A.) a member of 2007's winning crew, judged the competition and shared her knowledge and experience in a free youth Hip Hop forum. As well as B-Boy Red (Sydney) and B-Boy Kreate (Indonesia) completing the judging panel.

SHE GOT GAME featured a collection of some of Australia's finest musical and artistic talents. Mistery (prominent Sydney-based street artist and MC) and MC Que hosted the event, DJ Jumps (Cat Empire & I.S.O.) provided the beats for the early battles, and renowned Melbourne-based funk band, The Bamboos, provided live tunes for the final battles. Moreover, the scheduled line-up for the day included an impressive display of beat boxing, DJ sets by Australia’s only World DJ Champion DJ J-Red, as well as DJ C.T.B. (Switzerland), a dance performance by Nomadic Funk, street art exhibition, and other activities.

Street artists, MCs, DJs, and B-Boys in the International Hip Hop community converged on Melbourne amidst the hub of the action. When the world comes to your doorstep, the GAME is on.

The NutrientWater street team was ever present, hydrating everyone involved with their range of nutrient enhanced waters.

About Roxanne Shante
Real Name: Lolita Shante Gooden / Born: November 9 1969, Queens NY USA

Shante came to prominence at the tender age of 14 via her related answer record to U.T.F.O.'s 1984 rap hit, ' Roxanne, Roxanne'. Gooden was walking outside a New York housing project when she overheard three men discussing U.T.F.O.'s cancellation of a show they were promoting. In turn gooden offered them a reply record. The onlookers, DJ Mister Magic, Tyrone Williams and Marley Marl took her up on the offer.

Her version 'Roxanne's Revenge' mixed sassy, indignant raps with a funky backbeat. It was a massive hit, which sold over a quarter of a million copies in the New York area alone, and spawned a flood of answerback records (well over a hundred at the final count), as rappers queued to take up the challenge. U.T.F.O. replied by sueing her for using their b-side as the rhythm track.

Shante was still only 14 years old, and forced to stay away form school because of all the attention. Her arrival was cemented by further singles 'Have A Nice Day' and 'Go On Girl', produced by Marley Marl, with lyrics penned by Big Daddy Kane. Her debut album saw the conscious rhymes of songs like 'Independent Woman' (though it was written for her by a man) spliced by saucy narratives like 'Feeling Kinda Horny'.

By 1986, Shante was being edged from the centre of the female rap stage by The Real Roxanne (Adelaida Martinez) and her turntable wizard Hitman Howie Tee. Perhaps her most infamous post-'Roxanne' moment came with the release of 'Big Mama', which would see her take out her frustrations by dissing other female rappers Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, Yo Yo and Monie Love.

About Lady Fingaz
As the child of a musician some of Lady Fingaz earliest memories revolve around the stage, taking in her fathers gigs, and often sitting in to sing with the band. From this musical beginning she began studying piano, and it wasn’t until her teenage years Lady Fingaz would discover and enthrall herself in her first true love; hip-hop. Soon this Texas native found her element better known as turntablist, producer, and vocalist Dj Lady Fingaz. Moving to New Orleans in 2001 she kept perfecting her mixes and cuts, the basics of turntablism, all while earning two bachelor degrees in business at UNO. It was in New Orleans where she would quickly make a name for herself as a rising female talent in an all to often male dominated genre. In 2004 Lady Fingaz collaborated with local indie hip-hop label Media Darling Records, and toured the U.S. along side some of the labels most talented artists. Later that year she was honored with Best Emerging Hip-Hop Artist by Offbeats Best of the Beats awards for her accomplishments throughout New Orleans. Lady Fingaz has played alongside such artists as Floetry, Galactic, Killah Priest, Murs, Saul Williams, Dj Disk, Faust and Shortee, Buck 65, Dj Klever, and MC Chris just to name a few. She was also a featured performer in the Super Lounge at the 2005 Essence Music Festival. Lady Fingaz has held residencies at some of New Orleans premier nightclubs as well. In 2006 she joined Females Wit Funk a collective of the top female turntablists from around the world, which includes the likes of femme fatales Shortee, Tyra From Saigon, Annalyze, and many other extraordinary lady tablists. Following the destruction of hurricane Katrina, Lady Fingaz relocated to San Francisco, CA where she now resides furthering her musical pursuit. So now, after accomplishing so much in such a short amount of time, its easy to see why Lady Fingaz has attracted so many people, and even easier to expect great things from her in the future. We B*Girlz wants to present strong, smart, independent B-Girlz and other Hip Hop females as role models for upcoming generations to show everyone that there is a significant place for women in this worldwide culture. In addition, we want to preserve the history of women in Hip Hop by encouraging everyone to collect and archive materials from back in the days and to document the scene as it exists now.
Women play an important role in Hip Hop culture, but are presented by the media mostly as scantily dressed background dancers. We B*Girlz Productionz wants to show that women mastered skills in all aspects of Hip Hop and have earned a place in Hip Hop history.
In August 2008, supported by the “Hauptstadtkulturfonds” and with support of the mayor, we organized the world’s biggest festival for women in Hip Hop, a 4-week Festival with workshops, panel discussions, a film festival, exhibitions, battles and shows.
Our intention is to provide a platform for girls and young women from different nations and cultural backgrounds to make contacts, exchange ideas, and support each other.

In the course of the festival we produced a magazine, a compilation with female MCs and are now working on a DVD and a book.

"I was born in Singapore, which is a metropolis in SE Asia smaller than the size of the Greater Toronto Area. When I was 8 years old, I spent my Chinese New Year money on 2 bootleg tapes in Bedok Market. The first was Bananarama…I won’t lie…Venus was a very catchy song. The second was Public Enemy’sIt Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back. I fell in love with this foreign music, and remained intrigued by Flavor Flav’s giant clock! While my cousins listened to Taiwanese pop music, I was screaming “Don’t Believe the Hype!” and scribbling “911 is a joke” across my school binders, which of course went over very poorly with my Chinese mother.

We moved to Vancouver, BC for my dad’s job when I turned 9 and I couldn’t believe how much more accessible Hiphop was this side of the world. I fell in love with Graf styles and looked up as much as I could about the art. I discovered Asia One and Z-Boogie shortly after, marking the first time I saw women doing their thing in this culture of Hiphop. Friends began calling me Masia One for my respect to the Bgirl, and I began tagging that name.

I read an article in Source Magazine years ago, citing Toronto as the “Mecca of Hiphop” in Canada. Before graduating high school, I decided I would have to get a scholarship that would afford me the ability to go to The University of Toronto. I did just that, and graduated in Architecture with a minor in Economics. Go figure! I still really appreciate how buildings are designed, and how to make money. After moving in with The Ichiban Son, Editor in Chief of www.thecyberkrib.com, I got more involved in the local Toronto Hiphop scene, attending open mics and meeting heads from around the way that were establishing their art and name in this city. My roommate was throwing a show called “I Still Love H.E.R.” featuring Mystic from Oakland, and asked if I knew any female emcees interested in performing. I volunteered myself! I had always written rhymes and spit rhymes in secret, but never found the confidence to get over my shy afflictions. I promised myself that this would be the 1 time I performed to show myself that I could break out of my comfort zone. I loved feeling the energy on stage, got a VIBE commercial out of it, and I guess the rest is her-story."
